Anja Ganster. Tidal friction (constellation 6)

Anja Ganster has worked largely as a painter, however, she has recently also been active in the fields of sculpture, installation art and video. Her mostly realistic paintings executed in numerous glazed layers feature motifs like cityscapes and architectural views, interiors, still lifes and landscapes.

In the Print Room of the Museum Franz Gertsch, the Swiss-based German artist presents paintings and installations from the last three years. The small to mid-format works and a wall-filling piece executed in watercolour and gouache on paper as well as acrylic and oil on canvas continue with her “constellations” project and are woven together to create a collage-like installative whole. The artist has been occupying herself with such constellations since 2014, having already addressed them in five previous exhibitions. In the process, her dealings with foreign picture archives and memory cultures as well as her encounters in travel and work sites flow into her art.

Born in 1968 in Mainz (D), Anja Ganster lives and works in Binningen BL (CH). Her study of communication design was followed by studies of graphic art at the Akademie für Bildende Kunst Mainz and painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. The artist has received numerous prizes and travel grants since 1999 and has also had international solo exhibitions and participated in group shows since that year. The artist is represented in renowned institutions and collections.

The exhibition was curated by Anna Wesle in collaboration with the artist.

The exhibition catalogue will be published by modo Verlag, Freiburg i. Br.
