Franz Gertsch. Sommer

The artist’s recently completed painting “Meer 2017” [Sea 2017] (2016/17) will continue to attract the attention of visitors in the first exhibition space. The occupation with a turbulent body of water after a severe morning thunderstorm goes back to Franz Gertsch’s early works dealing with Saintes Maries de la Mer in the South of France (“Saintes Maries de la Mer I – III,” 1971 – 72). Gertsch already produced a woodcut that took up this theme in 2013 and, based on a 1971 photograph, varied a motif familiar from his painting (“Saintes Maries de la Mer,” 2013). The present work omits the girls on the beach, focusing instead on an atmospheric seascape without persons in a free and dynamic painting style. It will be accompanied by the “Silvia” woodcuts from the so-called Rainbow series, which will be shown for the first time in a long time.

The highlight of the exhibition is made up by the new woodcut “Sommer” [Summer] (2017), which will initially be shown in Burgdorf in four coordinated colours. It concerns a printed realization of the landscape familiar from the magisterial Four Seasons Cycle (2007 –11). The new prints will be combined with the painting “Sommer” [Summer] (2008 / 09): A room is created that inspires painstaking observation and contemplation.

The exhibition was curated by Anna Wesle in collaboration with the artist.

The exhibition has been realized with the generous support of the Ursula Wirz-Stiftung.
