Magdalena abakanowicz (*1930, lives andworks in Warsaw) is the most renowned contemporary Polish artist. She gained internationalacclaim with her monumental sculpturesand installations of hand-woven linen and jute-liketextiles called Abakans which she firstcreated in the early 1960s and for which shereceived the Great Prize of the Sao PaoloBiennial in 1965. Since then, she has developedher own complex and manifold cosmos ofarchaic figures that inhabit the great museumsof the world: gigantic tree trunks that mutatethrough applied metal constructions intomonstrous rockets; mythical creatures, part animal, parthuman; groups of mostly headlesshuman figures sitting, standing, walking ordancing which are both graceful and uncanny atthe same time.To celebrate the completion of the museum’ssurroundings, two of these monumentalsculpture groups totalling 30 single figuresaltogether will be presented outside themuseum. Until April 2005
