In her drawings, collages and installations, Monica Ursina Jäger deals intensively with natural and constructed environments. She examines habitat, landscape and architecture as societally and culturally charged spatial constructions and scrutinizes political and sensory relationships between natural and anthropogenic elements. Her current works deal with post-natural landscapes, the Anthropocene and the geopolitical dimensions of natural resources. Jäger’s interdisciplinary projects also include gardens, green roofs and ‘narrative environments’ in public space.
The Zurich artist shows large-format ink drawings of constructed landscapes, photo collages of hybrid spaces, painting with chlorophyll on paper, and a complex spatial installation with natural and industrial elements in the Cabinet of the Museum Franz Gertsch.
Monica Ursina Jäger was born in 1974 in Thalwil and lives and works in Zurich and London (GB). From 1996 she studied at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Art, at LaSalle College of the Arts, Singapore (SGP) and Goldsmiths College, University of London. She has regularly received studio grants and awards since 2005 and has frequently exhibited her work since 2007. As a research associate and lecturer in Sustainability Communication at the Institute for Natural Resource Sciences IUNR, ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences, she links art, science and their dissemination.
The exhibition was curated by Anna Wesle in collaboration with the artist, the exhibition catalogue will be published by modo Verlag, Freiburg i. Br. (D).
