The Righteous. An Ensemble of Sculptures by Werner Neuhaus

From August on, sculptures will be on view outside the Museum Franz Gertsch that have been selected from the “Righteous” series by Werner Neuhaus. These loosely grouped standing figures reference the Jewish legend of the 36 righteous persons, thanks to whom the world does not come to an end. Nameless, the legend states that a new one is born as soon as one of the righteous persons dies. The figures in the group that gaze as observers in all directions have been carved in oak. This is the first time in a long while that the outside space around the museum will be used to present works of art, enabling a dialogue here between the visitors, the sculptural groups and the museum architecture.

Werner Neuhaus was born in Lyss in 1970. After school and an orientation year he worked for a number of years in the fields of forestry and Alpine farming, producing his first artistic works at that time. From 1992 to 1993 Werner Neuhaus attended the school for sculpture at Müllheim. The freelance artist has been operating his own studio since 1996. He lives and works in Zollbrück in the Emmental valley. His wood sculptures have been shown at galleries and in public spaces since 1998.
